Spyware
has been classed as any technology that aids gathering of information
about a person or organisation without their knowledge.
Spyware
is programming that is placed in our computer secretly to gather
information about us and relay that same information to advertisers
or other interested third parties. Once installed, spyware can transmit
our personal information and download advertisements 24 hours a
day to our computer. (Providing we're online). It can also hijack
browser settings, such as your home page or search page. This will
also include information about Web sites we visit or something as
sensitive as our bank details, user name and passwords. Spyware
can also be used to send unsolicited, targeted advertisements as
you may have noticed in your emails or from the numerous pop-ups
adverts we see on our screen. Ever wondered, "Who these people
are?" If you receive any emails from unknown sources, do not
open them. This is just another means to enter your system. As soon
as you open these emails you can initiate the spyware to download.
So beware!
The
number of cases associated with spyware being used for fraudulent
purposes has increased enormously.
We
must therefore acknowledge that adware, software designed initially
to serve as advertising, must now be thought of as spyware because
it almost invariably includes components for tracking and reporting
our personal information. So, in future, look at any advert that
appears on your screen as a potential spyware program this way
we minimise the threat to ourselves.
